Little Angels - Gibson Twins
This is part of a series of geocaches that have been placed to remember the young lives that were lost to tragic circumstances and lost in history. Keeping their memories alive.
This is a story of twin sisters that were born minutes apart, died only minutes apart. “Double the giggles, double the grins, double the trouble when you’re blessed with twins” is an old saying, but it was mischief that sadly cost these girls their young lives.
It was a Sunday morning in July, 1918. Mrs Mary Gibson was in the kitchen preparing breakfast. The twins Sheila and May were in a bedroom playing. Suddenly there was a frightful scream come from the bedroom. Mary rushed in and found Sheila on the floor, frothing at the mouth and twitching. She asked May what happened, and she said that they had taken some pills that they had found. Then May started to froth at the mouth too.
Mary tried everything to save the girls, and the doctor was sent for. But nothing seemed to work, and as the doctor was coming from Geelong, he was still a good half an hour away. May succumbed first, and then Sheila only a few minutes later.
A search of the room later found that the girls had taken strychnine - a very highly toxic poison used for the eradication of vermin.
Two days later they were buried in the Inverleigh Cemetery - they were 4 years old, may they rest in peace.
