This cache is located near the ruins of a cutting shed in the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve.

The Cutting Shed Ruins sit within the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area (AMNHA), a landscape shaped by massive granite outcrops and a deep cultural history. Over time, this area has been home to early settlers, immigrant rock cutters, freed slaves, and Trappist monks. Quarries, agricultural sites, historic communities, and spiritual centers all leave their mark across the preserve.

The Cutting Shed is believed to be the remains of a structure used during the granite quarrying era. Built with a strong, thick floor to support heavy stone, it was likely open-sided with a roof. Large granite blocks were hauled from the quarries to this area for finishing, first by mule-drawn carts and later by cranes and derricks.

Inside the shed, stone cutters shaped granite into curbing, paving blocks, and building stones. Pointed chisels smoothed surfaces, while brush hammers finished stones that needed to fit precisely. Discarded or partially finished stones can still be seen nearby, offering quiet evidence of the work that once took place here.

Granite from this area was shipped across the United States, and many buildings in nearby Lithonia were constructed using stone quarried and finished in the Arabia Mountain region.

As you explore, watch for reminders of the quarrying landscape such as cut granite slabs, drilled cores, and abandoned structures. Please respect the site, stay aware of your surroundings, and tread lightly while you search for the cache.
