Alex Krycek, friend to no one, has worked for the FBI, allied with Cigarette Smoking Man, the Syndicate, and the Russian Syndicate. Krycek and Mulder are enemies who love to hate each other, although at times they have been reluctant allies.

Mulder and Krycek (as reluctant allies) once traveled to Russia looking for information. They were imprisoned in a gulag in Krasnoyarsk, where Mulder learned Krycek was a double agent working for the Russian taskmasters. Mulder was able to escape from the camp while taking Krycek hostage. The two became separated in the confusion. Krycek was found by a group of men whose left arms had all been amputated. In the middle of the night, the men forcibly severed Krycek's left arm to prevent his involvement in the black oil vaccination tests.

This area looks much like the area where Krycek lost his left arm…
