Located within the Harold Parker State Forest, Salem Pond is a relatively undeveloped area that’s easily accessible on a mountain bike, cross-country skis, horseback, or on foot. There are several routes into this area, all of which would allow you to easily reach the cache. There’s parking available at the Forest Headquarters (42º36.930’N, 71º4.392’W) or at the end of the Berry Pond Road (42°36.768’N, 71°5.448’W); it’s prohibited at most other entrances. You can get an official trail map at the forest headquarters. The wide woods roads are easily passable and the land is substantially flat so we’ve rated the terrain a “2” and the difficulty a “3” – just because you do have to walk a bit and navigation may be tough. If you pick the right route, you can easily reach the cache from your car in less than 15 minutes.
The pond is clean and pretty with plenty of frogs and such for kids to chase. This is a great spot for a family hike and picnic! If you find your family craving civilization, there are seasonal bathroom facilities and a guarded, sandy, accessible swimming and picnic area at Berry Pond (42°37.212’N, 71°5.262’W).
The “road” leads to within 100 yards or so of the cache with a bit of a bushwhack at the finish. The tree canopy may impede navigation in the summer – that’ll add to the challenge. The cache is an ammo box with some bright paint on the outside. We’ve included a camera and a logbook as well as assorted treasures to please young and old. Enjoy the hike!
