Geocache Description:

A series of 6 cache and dash opportunities situated along a country lane popular with commuters, or a simple way to avoid the Belmont Road when the city’s traffic has transformed it into a ‘car park’. All the caches are tiny tubes that are protected by a guardian given as the cache name and encased within a camouflage drawstring bag. Tweezers will be extremely useful for removing the logsheets and you will need to bring your own writing implement.

With the recent terrible weather it has been difficult to find many rural caches. These caches are hidden by gateways to be found swiftly and to fill in dates on your calendar or put more smileys on the map. Please re-hide carefully to help maintain the secret location of these geocaches.

So here are some dino facts for those cachers both young and old who are fascinated by the creatures that once ruled the earth . . .

Ankylosaurus

  • The name Ankylosaurus means ‘fused lizard’.
  • Ankylosaurus lived at the end of the Cretaceous Period (around 66 million years ago). They were one of the last dinosaurs remaining before the large extinction event that occurred around this time.
  • The Ankylosaurus was a large dinosaur. Scientists estimate it reached a length of around 9 metres (30 feet) and a weight of around 6000 kg (13000 lb).
  • Ankylosaurus were herbivores (plant eaters) and had small teeth relative to their body size.
  • The signature feature of Ankylosaurus was its body armor. Huge plates of bone were embedded into the skin which helped protect the Ankylosaurus against attackers. Similar body armor is found on a crocodile or armadillo.
  • Many types of the Ankylosaurus had a massive tail club that it could use to generate a large amount of force, potentially breaking the bones of another dinosaur while defending itself.
