Sheldon Allan "Shel" Silverstein was an Amercian poet, songwriter, cartoonist, screenwriter, and author of children's books. Translated into more than 30 languages, his books have sold over 20 million copies.

His work spanned from writings and drawings in Stars and Stripes during his service in Korea, writing country songs such as “a Boy Named Sue” performed by Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins, to writing books for children and those young at heart, such as the Giving Tree.

If you are not familar with the Giving Tree, the above link gives a narration by Shel from 1973. It's such a touching story that has meaningful messages. When time permits, please take a gander.
