[GN16] Casemate du Mont des Bruyères Traditional Cache

La casemate du Mont des Bruyères est l’un des douze ouvrages du saillant de la forêt de Raismes-Saint-Amand, dans le secteur fortifié de l’Escaut. 

Durant la guerre, seize d’hommes du 54e RIF (Régiment d’Infanterie de Forteresse) stationné à la caserne Ronzier à Valenciennes ont été affectés à ce fortin. Ces soldats formés à la vie autonome dans un véritable sous-marin devaient défendre une partie du secteur compris entre Notre-Dame d’Amour et la Taillette ; leur angle de tir étant précisément compris entre l’église de la Croisette et les Thermes.

Le blockhaus était équipé d’une cloche positionnée sur le haut de la casemate dans laquelle s’installait un guetteur qui avais à sa disposition un canon anti-char dans la chambre de tir, des fusils-mitrailleurs et un mortier pour la défense rapprochée. Tout était prévu pour permettre la vie en autarcie durant les opérations : filtre d’air, eau extraite d’un puits artésien à l’intérieur, groupe électrogène (lampes à pétrole en cas de panne). Le ravitaillement se faisait à partir de cuisines centrales installées à l’étoile de Cernay, dans la forêt.

Début juin 1940, après la bataille de l’Escaut qui à sévit durant six jours dans le secteur de Bruille-St Amand, les Allemands arrivent au Mont des Bruyères. Le fort est évacué. 

 The bunker of the Mount of Bruyères is one of the twelve works of the forest of Raismes-Saint-Amand, in the sector fortified of Escaut.

During the war, sixteen men of the 54th RIF (Fortress Infantry Regiment) stationed at the barracks Ronzier Valenciennes were assigned to this fort. These soldiers trained for independent living in a real submarine had to defend a part of the area between Notre-Dame d’Amour and Taillette; their shooting angle was precisely between the Church of the Croisette and Thermal bats.

The bunker was equipped with a tower positioned on top of the bunker where was installed a watchman with a disposal anti-tank in the firing chamber, machine guns and mortar for close defense. Everything was planned to support life in autarky during operations: air filter, water extracted from an artesian well inside, generator (oil lamps in case of failure). The supply was made from central kitchens installed in the Star of Cernay in the forest.

At beginning of June 1940, after the Battle of the Scheldt in raging for six days in Bruille St Amand-sector, the Germans arrive at Mont des Bruyeres. The fort was evacuated.
