[ITA] ORATORIO DI SAN ROCCO
L’oratorio di San Rocco venne edificato, anche grazie ad un legato in denaro, a partire dal 1632, periodo che corrisponde alla terribile epidemia di peste di manzoniana memoria ed in effetti San Rocco è considerato uno dei santi protettori da questo flagello. La sacrestia venne edificata in un secondo momento, intorno al 1770, a spese di Antonio Tedesco, lavorando anche nei giorni festivi, mentre il pronao sopra la porta di ingresso, detto “glorietta”, venne infine costruito nel 1862.
Proprio vicino all’oratorio, all’inizio della via Oliva che esce verso la provinciale, sul muro di una casa, è murata una lapide in marmo, datata 26 giugno 1467, in caratteri gotici e con il monogramma eucaristico IHS sormontato dalla croce.
Nel 1866 il signor Cesare Oliva, che fece importanti lasciti a favore dei poveri della sua frazione di origine, cioè Albo, ingiunse al fratello Giovanni Battista l’obbligo di offrire 500 lire a favore della chiesa di San Rocco. I due fratelli, originari di Albo, erano allora residenti a Mantova dove avevano portato la loro arte, e la loro maestria impiantando un “negozio di lattonaio e di peltraio”.

[ENG] ORATORY OF SAINT ROCCO
The oratory of Saint Rocco was built starting from the year 1632, partly also thanks to a bequest of money. That period coincides with a terrible plague epidemic that also features in one of the works of the Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, I Promessi Sposi; in fact, Saint Rocco is considered one of the patron saints against this disease. However, the sacristy was built later on around the year 1770, thanks to Antonio Tedesco, and the works were carried out even during holidays. Finally, the porch above the front door, also called glorietta, was built in 1862.
Right next to the oratory, a marble plaque dated 26th June 1467 is walled on the side of a house at the beginning of Via Oliva, which then opens out onto the main road. The plaque presents Gothic characters and the Eucharistic symbol IHS with the cross on top.
In 1866, Cesare Oliva enjoined his brother Giovanni Battista to offer 500 Lire in favour of the church devoted to Saint Rocco and he himself left important bequests to the poor people of his native hamlet, Albo. Despite this, the two brothers lived in Mantova at the time, where they had brought along both their art and mastery which were showcased in their tinplate and pewter shop.
