Geocache Description:

Please take caution when pulling off the road and replace cache exactly as found!

The Sundays River Valley is a low-lying area along the Sundays River.  The valley stretches from the Kirkwood prison grounds in the west to Colchester and Kinkelbos in the southeast. It is characterized by high-intensity agricultural activities (in particular the production of citrus fruits) and a well-developed irrigation system. In addition to citrus cultivation, various tourist attractions, bed and breakfast facilities, packing sheds and game-related tourist facilities are present throughout the valley.  The road up the valley from Port Elizabeth takes the traveller into an evergreen world of citrus trees. In October the trees are in full blossom, and the warm air of the Valley is heavy with their perfume.

The Sundays River valley is known for two things:

  • Citrus Capital of the Eastern Cape. Mile after mile of verdant citrus trees bear fruit all winter and scent the air with their blossoms in spring time.
  • The first complete dinosaur fossil to be found in South Africa was discovered in the Kirkwood Formation in the Algoa Basin. It was aptly nick-named "Kirky".

Kirkwood is the main settlement in the Sundays River Valley.

If it is a tame cheetah, ostriches, crocodiles or even lions you want to see other than roses, the valley has them all !
