The War – Time Journal – Elizabeth Curtis Wallace

Published by Norfolk County Historical Society, Chesapeake, VA

This limited edition book constitutes the Civil War

Diaries of Elizabeth and her daughter Katie Darling.

It is a chronicle of plantation life in Norfolk County Virginia during the years of 1863 – 1864.  This very personal account of home and family life is quite significantly laced with events of historical importance.

Elizabeth was one of the region’s most prominent citizens.  She kept a diary of her experiences during the war.  This diary records the anxiety and pain that the family and many others suffered during the Union occupation. It is most impressive the adaptability of Mrs. Wallace as she becomes no longer the attended lady of the plantation but rather must attend herself to the estate and its occupants.

Elizabeth McIntosh Curtis married George Thomas Wallace on February 24, 1835

They lived and raised their seven children in Wallaceton on 14,000 acres

in their home called Glencoe Plantation.

They had two sons who fought in the Civil War

Captain William Curtis Wallace and Captain John Gallaudet Wallace

WOW not only is ELIZABETH a published author she a woman
