Geocache Description:

A small cache. No longer magnetic. GL Will need to bring your own pen.

Welcome to RNZAF Wigram! Wigram is named after Sir Henry Wigram who lobbied the Government strongly in the 1920/s / 30's for the forming of an Air Wing to the fledgling NZ Defence. To this end, he purchased and donated 40acres of land for the foundation of an Air Force. Wigram was the first base in the Air Force which was enacted as the Royal New Zealnd Air Force on 01 April 1937. Over the years more land was purchased accommodate the increasing needs of the Air Force. This is as near as damn to the threshold of the old Wigram airfield (ICAO Code NZWG). Wigram was the main training base for not only Pilots and Navigators and all airman aicrew trades, but also home of No's 2 and 3 Technical Training Schools. 3TTS trained all support ground trades, and 2TTS taught Avionic trades. Wigram was also home to the Central Flying School where pilots and navigators went through their instructors course to become Flight Instructors themselves. The joke was that the course was named Pilots Instructional Course Navigators Instructional Course. With an acronym of PICNIC you can get the joke. The CT4E Airtrainer was the main pilot training aircraft and relocated to Ohakea when Wigram closed in 1995. 3 F27 Friendships were operated for Nav and AEOP training. This training relocated to East Sale in Australia in a agreement between the NZ & Aust Governments. 3 Sqn also had a detachment of Iroquois helicopters for South Island SAR and Army support roles. When Wigram closed, Ngai Tahu took it over and have developed much of what is going ahead. The original 40acres donated by Henry Wigram is still in Air Force hands, and is essentially the land around the Air Force Museum.
