Newtownhamilton or simply Newtown to locals is a small town in South Armagh. Before the Plantation of Ulster it was known as Tullyvallen and was renamed by Alexander Hamilton in 1773 and was once an important stop off between Armagh and Dundalk. The town has suffered in past decades from the rise of other towns in the area like Markethill, Castleblaney and Bessbrook as well as cities like Newry and Armagh becoming little more than a group of houses and small shops. This series will highlight a few local areas of history and interest.
Townsend National School was opened in the 1880's and was the main school for the Newtownhamilton area. Many of my family attended including my grandfather, uncle and aunt. My dad was lucky to be one of the first pupils to join the brand new Newtownhamilton Primary School when it opened in 1955. Townsend School was closed soon after and was bought by the local Presbyterian Church with a view to turning it into a church hall. This never materialised and it was allowed to fall into disrepair. There have always been suggestions to get it restored but none have been successful yet.

The year it opened is on a plaque at the front. The final digit will be A
There is a four digit number on the pole outside the school. The first digit can be B
Count the number of blocked up windows on the front of the school. This can be C
