La frazione Nibbio deve il suo nome all’omonimo uccello, spesso assimilato ad un altro rapace, il falco, ed infatti “Falchit” è il soprannome o blasone popolare dei suoi abitanti. Il nome potrebbe essere stato ispirato dalla presenza di un costone di roccia dalla forma di testa di falco che sporge dalla montagna nei pressi dell’abitato.

Negli anni ’60 del secolo scorso, durante lavori edilizi svolti nel centro del paese, vennero rinvenuti dei frammenti di vasellame di probabile epoca romana. Tale insediamento si sarebbe trovato di fronte all’importante sito di rinvenimento delle necropoli di Ornavasso (San Bernardo e In Persona) consentendo di ipotizzare un unico stanziamento posto sulle rive destra e sinistra del fiume Toce.

L’oratorio di San Pietro, con l’adiacente cimitero, era già esistente nel XV secolo e venne restaurato in più riprese nel corso del XVII secolo, anche utilizzando l’elemosina di Battista Fovanna e altri oblatori. Nel 1753 vi fu collocata la statua in legno dorato dell’apostolo Pietro, purtroppo trafugata dai ladri qualche anno fa e oggi sostituita da una copia. Nel 1866 venne edificata la “glorietta”, cioè il pronao antistante l’oratorio.

Nibbio is a hamlet whose name derives from that of a bird, the kite, which are namesakes in Italian. This bird is also often associated with another bird of prey, the falcon, that as a matter of fact is the nickname (“Falchit” in the local dialect) or coat of arms of the hamlet’s inhabitants. Moreover, the name could have also been inspired by a ridge in the nearby mountain which has a protruding falcon-head-shaped rock.

In the 60s, pottery fragments probably dating back to Roman times were discovered in the town centre while construction works were being carried out. This evidence of a settlement located right opposite the important discovery site of two necropolises in Ornavasso (Saint Bernard and In Persona) led to speculations over a single colony extending on both the right and left bank of the river Toce.

The oratory of Saint Peter already existed in the 15^th century together with the adjoining cemetery and it underwent several renovations during the 17^th century, also thanks to the donations made by Battista Fovanna and other benefactors. In 1753, the golden-wooden statue of the Apostle Peter was placed in the church which was however stolen some years ago and has now been replaced with a copy. In 1866, the glorietta was built which refers none other than to the porch in front of the oratory.
