Yothu Yindi (child and mother in the Yolngu language) were an Australian musical group. The band consisted of both aboriginal and non-Aboriginal (balanda) members.
The band performed from 1985 to 2013 when the lead singer died of Renal failure, and in line with Yolngu cultural protocols the family requested that the first names of the deceased no longer be used.
The song Treaty was written by Paul Kelly, Peter Garrett and Yothu Yindi. The song failed to chart on its original release in 1991 due to limited radio and television exposure.
Mushroom Records saw the potential for a dance-orientated remix and engaged sound mixers, Goodge, Campbell & Main to produce one and the Filthy Lucre remix was produce.
The remix modified the musical backing and dispensed with the majority of the English lyrics. The remix was almost entirely sung in the Gumatj language and entered the charts in July and peaked at 11.
