Geocache Description:

After enjoy looking at the bushmen art move further to the right to find the geocache.

The Elands Bay Cave rock paintings reflect the religious experiences and beliefs of the Bushmen whose ancestors lived in this area for more than 20 000 years. The paintings cannot be dated directly, but they are in a similar style to others that have been dated to between 200 and 6 000 years ago elsewhere in the Western and Southern Cape. This gallery of rock is of particular interest because it includes several hundred hand prints, large eland with bodies painted in red but from which the head, neck and legs have disappeared because they were done in white paint, other smaller antelope and few elongated human figures. Some images depict what the medicine men or shamans saw during trance experiences. They drew power from trance and their hallucinations to heal the sick, make rain and control the game. They do not know the exact significance of the hand prints, but they may have been part of the tradition of drawing religious power from the rock face or marking places of particular religious significance. Please enjoy looking at the art but do not touch the paintings.
