Dog Rock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Albany Canucks: After 277 finds, it's time to archive this.

In its current hiding spot, the cache keeps getting waterlogged, and it's not feasible to keep maintaining it. Thanks to all the finders who visited and logged coming here!

It's a great area, however, and look for a new cache coming near Dog Rock very soon from jamesknowlson!

Geocache Description:

A massive granite rock that looks like the head of a dog

This cache will take you to see a famous Albany icon - Dog Rock! This well-known landmark is a natural granite rock that looks much like the head of a dog. In 1921 a proposal to destroy the rock with explosives so that the road could be widened was defeated as a result of a public outcry. In 1938 a collar was painted on the rock to make it more visible, after concerns that its location so close to the road was a danger to drivers at night. The rock's name apparently dates back to the 1800s, and it has been the subject of many legends and stories since then.

You can approach this cache from the public footpath besides the road; there's no need to go around onto private property to get access.
