Geocache Description:

Ruth Patrick Science Education Center Observatory
Solar System Series - Dwarf Planet Haumea

The Dwarf Planet Haumea cache is part of the solar system cache series that forms an immersive, scaled model of our solar system in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA). The 5-meter (16.4-feet) dome of the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center (RPSEC) Observatory represents the diameter of the Sun known as Sol. The distance from the observatory to this cache is over 14 miles, which is the average distance of the orbit of Haumea around the Sun. The geocache itself is the size of an ammo can with an image of Haumea attached to the outside. The image of Haumea is scaled to the actual size if the Sun was 5 meters in diameter.

This cache was published on Leap Day, February 29, 2016, and the cache was hidden near Exit 29 on Interstate 20 in South Carolina. Those two numbers must be significant somehow.

Haumea is one of the dwarf planets. Here are the Dwarf planets listed in order from the Sun. Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris.

Haumea Facts:

  • Haumea is more eliptical than the other dwarf planets.
  • Haumea takes 283.28 Earth Years to orbit the Sun
  • A day on Haumea lasts 3.9 hours.
  • Haumea was discovered on December 28, 2004
  • Haumea is named for the Hawaiian goddess of childbirth and fertility
  • The known moons are Hi’iaka & Namaka, named after the daughters of the Hawaiian goddess
