There were many pioneers of Stavely. Here is one story:

In October 1902, H. Pearl Husted came from Big Hole Basin in Montana to establish a ranch on Willow Creek in the Blacktail district west of Stavely. Soon a neighboring homesteader, Hans Kohler (after whom Kohler Coulee was named) became his partner in the enlarging ranch.

Pearl later bought out his partner, Hans, and continued to buy out nearby homesteaders: Jack Hughes, Jim Ferguson, Fred Stone, Jack Clark, Art Babcock, Charles Henry and Jack McKinnon until he owned most of the ranch now known as Blacktail and presently owned by John Cross.

The homestead to the east of Pearl belonged to a staunch Scotsman, John Carmichael, who raised Angus cattle and was extremely loyal to the King. Pearl Husted, an American, raised Hereford cattle. These two men, very close neighbors and both bachelors were bosom buddies, each concerned about the other's welfare. Regularly this close friendship would erupt as the two argued and disagreed, always over the same two subjects - politics and the best breed of cattle, Herefords or Angus. Then for a time they would not be on speaking terms until tempers cooled but as each valued and needed the other's friendship, they were soon the best of friends again.

In the summer of 1929, Pearl Husted suffered a stroke and passed away suddenly. At that time he and his neighbor, John, had had one of their usual disagreements and were not on friendly terms. Just a few weeks later, John Carmichael, who was extremely shaken by his friend's sudden death, learned that he himself was suffering terminal cancer.

He requested that he be buried in the same plot beside his lifelong neighbor and that their graves be marked by one gravestone (to be paid for by John Carmichael).

Wilbert Husted, Pearl's brother, carried out that request and both oldtimers rest side by side in the Stavely cemetery where one gravestone marks their final resting place.

TO DETERMINE THE COORDINATES OF THE CACHE:

In the immediate area surrounding the grave of John Carmichael and Pearl Husted you will see the grave markers of other pioneers. The information on their gravestones will be used to complete the coordinates for the final cache. The physical cache is located at the following coordinates:

N 50 9.ABC   W 113 39.DEF

To complete the coordinates use the following clues:

AB = Locate the grave of Mary Richardson. How old was she when she passed away?

C = Locate the grave of Johanna C Hansen. What is the final digit in the year she passed away?

D = Locate the grave of baby Stewart N Ohler. Use the numerical value of the month in which he passed away.

EF = Locate the grave of Ray and Helen Johnson. Use the numerical value (where A=1, B=2,... Z=26) of Ray's middle inital. Twice.
