YES! Ice cream! I couldn't get enough of the exotical flavours that were available in the Spanish heladerías. In Belgium it was vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and perhaps pistacho if you were lucky (and liked that green flavour)
. That was it. But in Denia... there was a Walhalla of ice cream flavours. I especially liked the fruit flavours, orange and lemon in particular. With lemon being my absolute favorite! I could easily eat a liter (about 1.7 pint) of it. I had the largest cup and was always the first to finish it. Not obstructed by any brain freeze... I just LOVED it. The entire family always had a blast observing me and the incredible pace with which I finished my ice cream. So, there was ice cream during the day, at the beach. I had to ask my mom for money. Mostly popsicles, because they were the cheapest. Colajet (still available!) was my favorite. The combination of coke and lemon did it.
At night, after dinner, we were also allowed to get ice cream from 'Angelina', the ice cream vendor around the corner of the street Carrer de l' Oceá Pacific (see our cache Villa Mira CMC#1). Not every night, but about 2 to 3 times a week. Mostly popsicles, but sometimes we could have the somewhat more expensive 'Cornetto'. I mostly opted for Colajet again. If you had finished it, and you found a special mark on the wooden stick, you could get another one for free!
But the big treat was on Sundays, after having attended mass, as a reward for sitting still for an hour or so (was it truly only one hour? Perhaps it wasn't even an hour, but for me as a kid it seemed like it went on for ages...
). Anyway, the big treat was scoop ice cream, the largest cup we could finish. And we always got it from the heladería at the end of the Carrer Cop, leading from the iglesia 'Nuestra Señora de la Asunción' to the 'Glorieta' at the end of the Carrer Marqués de Campo, which road we called for some reason the 'Generalísimo'. There has always been an heladería or bar on the corner Carrer Cop/Carrer Marqués de Campo. I remember very well one year they had added a blue ice cream to their assortment. 'Pitufo' or 'Smurf' ice cream. Of course, as Belgians (Pego, who created the Smurfs, is a Belgian comic writer) we didn't hesitate for a moment and tried it right away. Wrong! It has an aweful taste. Bubblegum, and if there was a thing I didn't like as a kid, it was bubblegum. So, that was a once in a lifetime experience, no matter my Belgian roots.
The flavour is still available though, meanwhile in many ice cream shops all around the world. We used to finish our ice creams while seated on the spot that you can see in the picture. There is a small statue in that location now. And the cache is hidden really close to it, but more to the side of the road, because of the high muggle factor.
