Geocache Description:

This is an earthcache and has no container. The purpose of the cache is so you can learn some of the geology of the area. The parking coordinates will take you to the two parking areas for the McHugh Creek day use area.

Please be careful along the Seward Highway and it is NOT recommended to pull in while going south on the highway. This is a high accident area so be careful!

This is an easy enough earthcache and uses information from the two signs at the coordinates provided. If you stand at GZ and look towards two informational signs, you will be looking at the Turnagain Arm and standing over it at this point is Hope Point. Now just imagine thousands of years ago, most of this area would have been covered and buried under thousands of feet of ice. Hope Point at 3,700 ft, as you can learn from the informational signs was left uncovered by the glacier; take a moment and see if you can see the difference once you read the signs and know what to look for. If you time your visit just right, you could also watch as the Bore Tide comes into the Turnagain Arm.

For more examples of glacial scraping, use the reference point that will lead you to Boy Scout Rock. There is a small trail by the nearby parking lot that will lead to another overlook and a small gravel trail that will lead to Boy Scout Rock.

Using the information from the signs and interpreting the information, answer the following questions. When sending your answers, please include the GC code along with the members of your group in an email to myself, please do not post answers in you log.

1. What glacier covered the Turnagain Arm and when did this occur?

2. How thick was the ice that once covered this area?

3. What direction was the glacier moving to cause the scrapping here and shortly explain how it occurred?

4. How many examples of glacial scraping are present in the immediate area? Also, in your opinion which rocks at the coordinates show the best example of scraping and explain why you think they are the best example?

5. The most important requirement (but optional), we love taking pictures and seeing photos of the area. So please take a photo of yourself or your group with Point Hope behind you. Do NOT include the signs at the posted coordinates in your photo or the rocks in the area as best as possible.

Any armchair logs will be deleted along with any logs without answers being submitted in a timely manner. Please do NOT post answers, even encrypted, in your log or pictures or we will have to delete your log, which we would hate to do.
