Geocache Description:

You're looking for a 1 litre clip box in a camo bag. Tree cover can cause issues with GPS accuracy so all caches are hidden to be found easily and the supplied hint will be as explicit as possible.

Welcome to the Savernake Saunter!

Savernake is an ancient woodland and designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is privately owned by the Marquess of Ailesbury and his family, and is administered by trustees.
Since 1939 the timber of the forest has been managed by the Forestry Commission on a 999-year lease. The private status of Savernake - Britain's only privately owned forest - is maintained by shutting the forest to the public one day per year – please do not attempt a visit if the park is closed.

This series of 18 caches explores some of the smaller trails around the northern part of the mature woodland. There are also some ancient named Oaks to look out for, which some of the caches have been named after.

Parking is free at Postern Hill near no.1 of the series, however please note the gate closing times as it is not open 24 hours. There is a layby on the A346 just to the south of the entrance if you plan on visiting after park closing time.

Please also be aware of the following:

  • The trails can get very muddy especially after rain or during the winter, so Wellingtons or stout walking boots are advised.
  • There are plenty of brambles to contend with, and as this series was placed in the winter there is a strong possibility that nettles could also protect caches during the summer months.
  • Public toilets are available at Postern Hill during the Summer months, and at weekends there’s also the chance of an ice cream van too! Otherwise local facilities are available in the supermarket at the bottom of Savernake hill heading towards Marlborough.
  • Please note that the forest may harbour ticks and other parasites – please check your caninie colleagues after the walk

Many thanks to both the Forestry Commission and Savernake Estate, who very kindly agreed to the placement of this series - please take a moment to read the below advice from the Forestry Commission:

  • This is a working wood/forest, and you may come across work sites, workers and vehicles during your visit. Please avoid all working areas and obey any safety signs and instructions. You must not enter any areas where access has been restricted.
  • This forest and the roads and tracks are used for a lot of different activities. Please respect their rights to enjoy their recreation.
  • Conditions can change very rapidly in forests and woodlands. Please make sure that you are properly prepared for your visit, and please take care for your own safety.
  • In the interests of safety the Forestry Commission strongly recommends that you carry a mobile phone and first aid kit and leave details of the mobile number, route and expected return time with a friend, relative or responsible person.
