Wallace and Son - Superintendent’s House
Wallaceton Norfolk County, VA
George Thomas Wallace and Elizabeth Curtis
Married in 1835
They purchased almost 14,000 acres along Dismal Swamp Canal.
This area became known as Wallaceton.
Many generations of Wallace’s lived, worked and are buried nearby.
In 1863, George and son John became business partners - WALLACE AND SON.
The family enterprises were extremely prosperous.
A sawmill was constructed on the west bank of Dismal Swamp Canal.
On the east bank, they built a two-room store building. The building functioned as a company store for the workers who lived in the small community.
The post office was in located in the store and used “Wallaceton” as the post mark.
The Superintendent’s House is the building in the left foreground.
The mill is the large structure on the right bank.
John’s business dealings were interrupted by his service in the Confederate army. He was a captain in the 61st Virginia Regiment. He returned home to the family business after being wounded in the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864.
He returned home to Glencoe with his bride, Veronica McGehee from Louisa County. Because she was snubbed by the family women, Captain Wallace turned the store building on the canal into a house for her after the Civil War.
The store then became housed in the superintendent’s house.
