Geocache Description:

In a recent caching dry spell, I started branching out and looking for benchmarks. I had already found a few here and there, mostly by accident, but if you start looking, you can really find some interesting ones! Below are a few of my favorites. But those are just for fun. To find this cache, just go to the posted coordinates. You're looking for a simple pill bottle. Make sure to check out the benchmark while you're there. Happy hunting!

At the posted coordinates, you'll find benchmark HS5190 (designation J 1456). It's a "metal rod" type, which means it's a stainless steel rod hidden under a "5-inch logo cap", which is just a round metal cover. It's one of the many types you can find besides the standard round benchmark.

Here are some of the more interesting types of benchmarks I've encountered.

Chiseled Square B

Chiseled Square B is, as described, a square chiseled into a concrete curb. This one was so faded I almost couldn't see it. I had to look at previous photos to see exactly where it was, and then I was able to find the faint outline. (I made that arrow out of sticks for the picture.)

Vertical Control Disk C 1457

The benchmark itself is normal enough, but it marks a seemingly random rock on the side of Loma Prieta Way in the Santa Cruz mountains. The significance of this rock is a complete mystery to me. But it was a cool benchmark and a fun drive.

St. Joseph's Church Cross

The large dome on the top of the church is the benchmark! I don't think there's an actual benchmark disk up there, though. If you read the description, it clearly describes the "station" as the largest dome surrounded by four smaller domes and surmounted by a cross. The casino dome at the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz is another one like this.

Have you found any interesting or unusual benchmarks? Post them in your log!
