Hunger hit and Jasper headed South from Old Salem to enjoy some BBQ. (N35. 50.638 / W080.15.212) was his favorite place. Reaching another downtown, he noticed that this place is not only a great place to eat, but the city is rich in history and monuments. Walking through downtown is like stepping back in time to a simpler, quieter life. The people are down-home friendly and there’s even an old-fashioned type merchandise store, promising to carry nearly everything you’d ever need. (N35.49.351 / W080.15.304).
Take the time to read the monuments and see if you can answer these questions:
1. How did the city get its name?
2. Why did Captain Merrill sacrifice his life?
3. What father and son came from Pennsylvania to settle on the Yadkin River?
4. How many men gave their lives for the flag? During what war? How many were African-American?
5. What other wars are represented by monuments?
6. Find the plaque for what Court House built in 1858.
