The Green Heron Butorides virescens is a striking bird with a velvet-green back, rich chestnut body, and a dark cap often raised into a short crest. These small herons crouch patiently, at the water’s edge, often hidden behind a tangle of leaves, to surprise fish with a snatch of their daggerlike bill. They sometimes lure in fish using small items such as twigs or insects as bait. As you can see from the photos, they look like totally different species depending on whether their neck is extended or drawn up.
I often see them flying around the stand of nearby trees. The container is a small peanut butter jar containing a few, small trading items. You will need to bring the writing implement of your choice. There is plenty of parking on the shoulder of the road, please do not block the gate.
