This particular type of Moblie Tracking Station was first built in 1979 in the USA and was used for space research and communications.
The GZ overlooks the former MOD Saltersgate Ammunitions Depot which was operational between 1939 and 1969.
You can still see remains of the high security fencing, bunkers and blast walls as well as a lookout tower.
The site had an internal narrow gauge railway which linked to the normal gauge railway at the former Burnhill Military Exchange Station near the lookout tower.
