A nice float down the chilly but beautiful Watauga River.
While this float can be done at any water level, it is recommended to do it with no generators running at Wilbur Dam. See the related web page for generating schedules at Wilbur. Floating this section while generating, the water is very swift and recovery can be difficult should you end up swimming by accident.
Watuaga River takes you through some incredible scenery, the water is crystal clear and very cold. This stretch of river is a nice mix of flat water and small but fun Class II rapids.
