Geocache Description:

This is a very historic cemetery in a very historic town.  There are benches for you to rest or just reflect on the experience.  Take time to explore the area and learn more about the great history of Texas.


There are at least 2 cemeterys in this historic town.  One is known as the "Old Cemetery" and was established in 1838.  The "New Cemetery" where this cache is located was established in 1868; therefore, the "new" cemetery.  This cemetery is the burial place of many honored Texans, including Dr. Charles B. Stewart, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico and the first Secretary of State.  Also wife of Gen. Mwmucan Hunt, Texas soldier and statesman.  Other noted individuals here include soldiers of the Texas Army and soldiers of the Confederate Army and other veterans of wars engaged in by the United States.  The first person buried on the land were 3 men killed by vigilantes .
