Geocache Description:

There are 9 caches placed as an extension of the Poetry Trail series. They may be combined with the Poetry Trail series of 6 caches or completed in their own right as a circular walk of approximately 6 kilometres (4.5 miles) beginning at Frank’s Bridge by the River Eden.

Kirkby Stephen is a small market town in Cumbria. The town is located on the A685, surrounded by sparsely populated hill country, and about 25 miles from the nearest larger towns, Kendal and Penrith. The town has many cafes, restaurants, pubs and fish & chips shops for refreshment. There is some limited parking in the Market Square where there are public toilets and a TIC (limited winter opening hours). There is also a large (free) car park situated in Silver Street 100 yards from the town centre. If you are combing these caches with the Poetry Trail there is also car parking available at a small car park at N54*27.699 W02*21.129.

Hartley is a small village across the River Eden from Kirkby Stephen and accessible by car or more directly by footpath. There are no amenities or other facilities.

All caches are placed with permission of Northern Viaduct Trust (NVT) and Kirkby Stephen Town Council or are adjacent to the public highway. It is not possible to complete the series by car without walking a short distance along the old railway line. The old railway line is also a very popular dog walk, take care when accessing caches. In wet weather some of the footpaths can be muddy and slippery so please wear appropriate foot wear.

This series is not recommended for wheelchair users due to a steep hill and the presence of HGVs through Hartley village.

All caches are placed to be family friendly but on the circuit there are some steep slopes and you pass close to the River Eden, please be mindful of this if you have small children with you.

Please keep dogs under close control and on a lead when passing through areas containing sheep. None of these caches are in walls and there is no need to remove any material to find them.

All the caches are Micro and contain a log only, please bring your own pen and tweezers. Some have no hint to make them a little more “interesting” for Geocachers to find, please ensure they are replaced exactly where found.

Go down to the view point site for more information on the building of the viaduct.
