Geocache Description:

Possession Point was originally named as “Tai Hang Hau” (Big Puddle) (大坑口). Hang Hau in Chinese means the mouth of water trench, reflecting the mouth of a stream from Victoria Peak. Before Hong Kong was developed into a city, Hang Hau was located at today’s main road and its water flowed into Victoria Harbour.

On 26 January 1841, Commodore James Bremer (commander-in-chief of the British forces in China) took formal possession of Hong Kong on 26 January 1841. A flag raising and gun ceremony marked the official possession of Hong Kong, and the landing venue was renamed as "Possession Point". Later, the British forces set up military camp there.

After the military camp moved to Central in 1890's, Possession Point became an open space, and used for bazaar market by the local Chinese, who called it "Tai Tat Tei" (large piece of land) (大笡地). It showcased a rendez-vous of old Hong Kong style street entertainment activities. People gathered to browse at night market, eat cheap food and watch free entertainment.

The site was rebuilt as Hollywood Road Park in 1980's. It is built in Chinese architectural style and is surrounded by buildings nearby.

The point has now disappeared from the coastline, but Possession Street and the sudden turn of Queen's Road West reveals its original location. In maps of the 1980s and before, Hollywood Road Park is marked as Possession Point. This marks the original site which, owing to land reclamation, is no longer located on the coast.
