İsmini yaban çiçeği anlamına gelen hoş kokulu bir bitkiden alan Şile, M.Ö. 7. yüzyılda Miletli denizciler tarafından kurulmuş ve o günden bugüne çeşitli uygarlıklara ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Ayrıca Şile tarihinde Lidya, Pers, Galat, Roma, Selçuklu, Latin, Bizans, ve Osmanlı imparatorlukları da yer almıştır. İlk yerleşenlerin Bitinler olması nedeniyle Anadolu uygarlıkları içinde bu bölgeye Bitinya da denilmektedir.
1050 yılında Selçuklu birlikleri Şile'yi ele geçirirler, ancak 1097 yılında tekrar Bizans hakimiyetine geri döner. 1327 yılında Akçakoca Bey tarafından Kocaeli Yarımadası'nın büyük bölümünün Osmanlı hakimiyetine geçmesine rağmen Şile Bizans elinde kalır, ancak Anadolu'dan getirilen Türkmen aşiretleri Şile çevresine iskân edilir ve 1395 yılında Sultan Yıldırım Bayezit döneminde Osmanlı egemenliğine girer.

Şile is your prototypically sleepy town during the winter and a magnet of seaside excitement when the warm weather strikes.
Located 70 km from the heart of Istanbul, you can be to Şile in about an hour via public transport from the city's Üsküdar district, enjoying any of a number of its beaches along the chilly Black Sea. Once you're in town, it's all about the coastal attractions, whether you're up for an afternoon dance party or a day of surfing or a walk along the picturesque Şile Limanı (port) with its dinners served straight from the fishing boats, or a boat ride to the rocky outcroppings of the sea to view Byzantine ruins of Şile Castle up close. Lastly, the greatest landmark in town is the old lighthouse overlooking the water, the black-and-white striped Şile Feneri. The views from the top provide a breathtaking perspective of the Black Sea coast.
