What is an Equinoxe?  The Equinoxe is the time or date (twice each year) at which the sun crosses the celestial equator. (The celestial equator is the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator.) when day and night are of equal length (about September 22 and March 20).

F.Y.I. The Equinoxe is not entirely an equal Day and Night. On the equinoxes the Sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is almost equal, but not quite.

Hipparchus of Rhodes? Hipparchus, a Greek astronomer and mathematician, discovered the precession of the equinoxes, he calculated the length of the year to within 6 1/2 minutes. He also compiled the first known star catalog, and made an early formulation of trigonometry.

Fun Fact: For our area in Redding, CA, the actual time that Spring starts is 9:30 PM PDT on Saturday, March 19, 2016 and the Universal Coordinated Time Zone is 4:30 AM UTC on Sunday, March 20, 2016
