Gunlock State Park encompasses an approximate 266-acre reservoir located 15 miles northwest of St. George. The reservoir dam that holds back the water was built in 1970 to provide irrigation water and flood control. The park is a primitive set up with only a few small buildings for restrooms and no potable water or electrical hookups. The park was named after the nearby community of Gunlock. The community of Gunlock was named after William "Gunlock Will" Hamblin who was the first settler in the area. He got the nickname for being skilled at repairing gunlocks which were the firing mechanisms for muzzleloader guns.
