Geocache Description:

CARW2016 themes.... Not of this World, Music, Canadian Patriotism.... Who better epitomizes all of these than Colonel Chris Hadfield?

Colonel Chris has gone for a spacewalk into the abyss. He is tethered to safety, but a rogue piece of space junk, a clumsy cacher, or sheer fate could send him floating into the vast emptiness beyond.

Chris Hadfield (b. 1959) is a Canadian astronaut and was the first Canadian to walk in space. After a distinguished career as a test pilot, Hadfield became an astronaut in 1992. Over the course of his career, Hadfield laid claim to a series of Canadian firsts: he was the first Canadian to be a space mission specialist, to operate the Canadarm in orbit, to do a spacewalk and to command the International Space Station. He was also the first to record a music video in space — David Bowie’s “Space Oddity”— adding to his celebrity status. Hadfield retired from the Canadian Astronaut Corps in July 2013.

A quick word about the cache site: This is a great little spot close to my house, with a spectacular view of the North Saskatchewan River. If you look to the North, you will see some more precariously perched homes that could one day be another earthcache site. The cache is located entirely on public property- this is actually a closed road allowance (see map uploaded in the photo gallery). However, directly to the north and about 15 meters to the south of the cache are private property. If you walk in due west from Whitemud Road (stay between the inukshuk and the juniper beds), you will be entirely on City property.

Due to the proximity of private property, and the very steep bank, this cache is not for night caching. Please do not search for this cache after dark. Keep children close at all times, be safe, and have fun!
