Albany Canucks: It's time to retire this one. Like Darwin, it looks like this cache has died. But he was still wrong!

Geocache Description:

A historic location overlooking Albany's beautiful Ellen Cove

Charles Darwin was wrong about a lot of things. Just consider what he wrote about his visit to Albany in 1836: "We staid (sic) there eight days and I do not remember since leaving England having passed a more dull, uninteresting time ... He who thinks like me will never wish to walk again in so uninviting a country." Really Mr Darwin? Albany is dull and uninteresting? We all know better than that! He further wrote: "Certainly I formed a low opinion of the place." You are so very wrong, Darwin, because Albany is a stunning place! How can we trust anything this guy wrote, when he says things like this about our beloved Albany?

Darwin visited Albany aboard the HMS Beagle in 1836, and to commemorate the 180th anniversary of his visit, the City of Albany has installed seven interpretive signs along part of the Ellen Cove boardwalk near Middleton Beach. Even some of these signs acknowledge Darwin's flaws, for example one sign says: "Many of Darwin's observations and comments on the geology of King George Sound later proved to be incorrect." In a media article about the 180th anniversary of Darwin's Albany visit, UWA Professor of Biodiversity Stephen Hopper is also quoted as saying that Darwin "got wrong completely the geology." I'm not convinced we need signs to commemorate a guy who was so wrong about so many things, but there you go.

This small geocache may take some effort to find, and will take you to part of the Ellen Cove boardwalk in the area close to the commemorative signs. This is a very popular walk, with delightful views of Middleton Beach and the pretty Ellen Cove. When Darwin left Albany, he wrote: "Farewell Australia. I leave your shores without sorrow or regret." I hope my fellow geocachers will ignore what Darwin says, and instead linger to enjoy the created beauty of Australia, Albany, and Ellen Cove, saying the opposite: "Hello Albany. I love your shores, and it is hard to remember passing a more interesting time than walking in so wonderful a country!"
