Take the path up from Sharpstones STRAIGHT UP THE HILL ( a bit of a scramble) then turn left along the gravel road until the grassy knoll rises to your right. Up this hillside you must scrarmble to GZ ..... but it is well worth the effort
When you have grabbed the cache walk down the hill to the path towards the farm....there is a footpath through the farm...via small gates which leads to the next cache.
I’m leading you on a circular stroll from Lomas Lane over Horncliffe Heights down to Edenfield and back, stopping to take in all the views. Of all my series to date this is the one I would recommend to photographers…….so many photo opportunities en-route.
The series has mainly good paths but there are a couple of steep off-path ascents to gain the magnificent views. Don’t forget to pick up ellenw’s Fruity Mix (GC5CW60).
Near to farms a degree of Muggle awareness is needed but otherwise take your time and enjoy :)
Coming back down into Rawtenstall take in the views over the valley and motorway and keep an eye out for steam trains puffing up and down the East Lancashire Railway. I was fortunate laying these caches to be on hand as the Flying Scotsman in its original green livery steamed down the line…. A magnificent sight.
Horncliffe House, latterly known as Horncliffe Mansion is a port of call on the return leg ..sad to see its state now compared to its historic origins but worth a look. See here for more details.
