W mitologii greckiej Pigmalion był królem Cypru, który, jak podaje Owidiusz w swoich Metamorfozach, zamiast zajmować się rządzeniem poświęcił się sztuce. Szczególnym zainteresowaniem darzył rzeźbę. Zniechęcony zachowaniem współczesnych sobie kobiet, wyrzeźbił posag kobiety idealnej, tak pięknej, że sam się w niej zakochał. Rzeźba była tak doskonała, że odróżnić ją od prawdziwej kobiety można było tylko dotykiem. Pigmalion traktował rzeźbę jak prawdziwą kobietę, obdarowywał ją kwiatami i prezentami, przebierał w wytworne stroje, rozmawiał długie godziny. Nie mogąc liczyć na to, że marmurowa rzeźba odwzajemni jego uczucie cierpiał nieznośne męczarnie. Afrodyta, bogini miłości widząc cierpienia Pigmaliona, wzruszona jego modłami ożywiła kamienną rzeźbę i nadała jej imię Galatea. Ze związku Pigmaliona i Galatei narodził się syn Pafos (według innych legend córka), który założył miasto Pafos. Zbudował w nim wspaniałą świątynię ku czci bogini Afrodyty.
Dzieje Pigmaliona i Galatei pobudzały wyobraźnię artystów każdej epoki. Ślady wielkiej miłości dwojga kochanków odnaleźć można zarówno na kartach książek i na obrazach , na scenach teatrów operowych i dramatycznych, w salach koncertowych. .
Przesłaniem mitu o Pigmalionie jest teza, że każdy z nas nosi w swoim sercu „wyrzeźbiony” obraz „tego kogoś”, ideału, swojej drugiej połowy. Nie każdemu jednak udaje się tą swoją „połówkę” odnaleźć.

In Greek mythology, Pygmalion is a legendary king of Cyprus, who, according to Ovid’s narrative poem Metamorphoses, devoted himself to art instead of ruling his country. He was particularly interested in sculpture. Discouraged by the behavior of modern females, he carved a statue of a perfect woman so beautiful that he fell in love with her. The sculpture was so perfect that it could only be distinguished from the real woman by touch. Pigmalion treated the sculpture like a real woman, gave her flowers and presents, dressed up in fine clothes, talked to her for hours. As the statue was not able to reciprocate his feelings he suffered intolerably. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, seeing the suffering of Pigmalion, touched with his prayers, animated the stone sculpture and named her Galatea. Pygmalion married her. They had a son, Paphos, (in some versions it was a daughter ) from whom the city's name is derived. Paphos erected a magnificent temple dedicated to Aphrodite.
The story of Pigmalion and Galatea stimulated the artists’ imagination throughout ages. Traces of their great love can be found in books and paintings, on the stages of opera and dramatic theaters, in concert halls. .
The myth of Pygmalion depicts the belief that each of us carries in their heart the "carved" image of "the one," the ideal, of their other half. Not everyone is going to find their "half".
