Il Centro è una fondazione del Comune di Prato, una struttura polivalente ed un punto di aggregazione sociale che svolge numerosi studi, ricerche ed attività operative in difesa dell'ambiente. Comprende anche un museo di scienze naturali ed un parco ambientale con animali in libertà. Fino dalla sua fondazione il Centro ha adottato come simbolo il Picchio verde (Picus viridis). Nel simbolo il Picchio verde è raffigurato su una corteccia di Pino marittimo (Pinus pinaster). Sullo sfondo si vedono le tre caratteristiche cime a pan di zucchero del Monteferrato, località dove il Centro ha la sua sede. Proprio nelle pinete del Monteferrato il Picchio verde è ritornato dopo molti anni, grazie anche alla continua attività di protezione e ripristino dell'ambiente naturale realizzata dal Centro.

Il Centro è chiuso al pubblico il lunedì ed il martedì. Aperto per visite guidate, didattiche o per gruppi culturali.

L'ingresso al Centro di Scienze Naturali non è consentito con cani o animali domestici in quanto non sono compatibili con gli animali selvatici che vivono liberi in questo ambiente. Inoltre, l'eccesso di stimoli che percepiscono potrebbero indurli ad uno stato di eccitazione che può essere negativo per loro stessi.

The Centre is a foundation of the City of Prato, a multipurpose and a social gathering point structure that performs numerous studies, research and operational activities to protect the environment. It also includes a museum of natural sciences and an environmental park with animals roaming free. Since its foundation, the Centre has adopted as a symbol of the Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis). In the symbol the Green Woodpecker is depicted on a bark of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster). In the background you can see the three characteristics peaks at Monteferrato sugar loaf, locations where the Centre has its headquarters. Just in the pine forests of Monteferrato green woodpecker it has returned after many years, thanks to the continuous protection activities and natural environment restoration made by the Centre.

The entrance to the Natural Science Center is not allowed with dogs or pets as they are not compatible with wild animals living free in this environment. Furthermore, the excess of stimuli that could otherwise cause them to a state of arousal that can be negative for themselves.
