Geocache Description:

*** WE ARE CURRENTLY OUT OF COINS***

The last visible vestige of Georgia's famed "dead town" of Sunbury, the historic Sunbury Cemetery tells a story in stone and silence.

The cemetery was cleaned up and fenced in 1980 and is entered via an ornamental gate on its south side where visitors will find interpretive markers and a stone monument.

Sunbury Cemetery is a colonial cemetery, and is the final resting place of the first founders of Sunbury. The Cemetery houses the remains of members of the Midway Congregational Church and Sunbury Baptist Church among others. The most famous tombstone of which is Rev. Dr. William McWhir, D.D. Born in Ireland and educated at Belfast Academy, he served as principal of the Sunbury Academy for thirty years and was an associate of General George Washington. He died on June 30, 1851, and his stone is one of the markers still to be seen in the cemetery. The Georgia State Society and National Society of Daughters of American Colonists maintain and upkeep the cemetery.
