Geocache Description:

Lightning caused the fires around here, not a prescribed burn.

No prescribed burns in this park, due to the wind conditions. That's why you see chopped down fire breaks and remnants from three recent lightning strikes. Lightning can strike a tree and make it smoulder for days until it explodes and starts a wildfire. By then there's no more rain to help control it.

The Visitor center is made of wood and therefore vulnerable in case of fire. That's why everything is cleared away around there. Let's hope it will look better soon.

Is Florida really the lightning capital of the world?

Almost. That title actually belongs to the African country of Rwanda, which has 2 1/2 times the lightning strikes we have in Florida. Florida has another title. It is the lightning capital of the United States. And Central Florida -- from Tampa to Titusville -- has the added distinction of being called "Lightning Alley."

The cache is now a micro, bottle cap kind. It's to the right of the picture above. BYOP and please return as you found it, with the plastic bag. It will help keep it dry. .
