Nova Denia is one of the oldest tourist development areas around Denia. In the seventies there were no urbanizations, only lots of orange orchards as far as the eye could see, even adjacent to the beach. The only buildings were the apartment blocks, and the handful villas that were being built in the street now known as ‘Carrer de l’Ocea Pacific’ and a couple of villas scattered in the neighbourhood. The road from Nova Denia to the city of Denia was very green, with only here and there a building. I loved, and still love, the sight of the brown apartment blocks, that are named after famous Spanish painters: Ribera, Goya, Zurbarán, Zuloaga, Velazquez. When we came to Denia from Belgium by car, and had left the ‘highway’ and drove through the orange orchards to the coast, the skyline with the brown apartments told us we were almost there, just a couple more minutes and we’d arrive at our home, Villa Mira. I still get that feeling of excitement, and happiness, when we drive that same road and I discern the brown ‘dinosaurs’, even if we’re only returning from an afternoon of shopping in the La Marinara shopping mall in Ondarra.
