Educational Cache Info: (horsetail)
The area between the picnic tables and the creek is filled with a unique plant called horsetail (also known as scouring rush). Its leafless, round, hollow stalks can grow up to 3 feet high. Considered living fossils, their relatives from 350 million years ago grew as tall as the trees of today. The rough feeling of their stem is due to a high silica content, which accounts for the “sandpaper” texture and why they’re used for scouring (cleaning) pots.
