Geocache Description:

A guided walking tour of downtown Providence, Rhode Island.

The Independent Man

Welcome to the Independence Trail of Providence, Rhode Island, a 2.5 mile tour of Providence. From start to finish you will travel through over 4 centuries of American history, architecture, culture and folklore. You will be following the green line on the sidewalk for the most part, however there will be some areas that you will bypass and some areas where you will need to venture off the line for an up close look.

The independence Trail was created and is maintained by Robert Burke. Much of the information you learn along the way was taken from his dial up guided tour.

Parking is free on Sundays.

What is a Wherigo Geocache?

Wherigo is a new way of utilizing GPS technology to play games, take tours, and yes geocache.

You can view the Wherigo FAQ for additional information or you can jump right into Wherigo.com to learn more about Wherigo GPS-enabled adventures, Play Anywhere cartridges, and the growing number of Wherigo geocaches.

Do I need special equipment?

Yes, you will need:
1. A Wherigo enabled device
2. The Independence Trail Wherigo Cartridge

Wherigo enabled devices:
Garmin Colorado
Garmin Nuvi 500
Garmin Oregon
iPhone with the Wherigo app
Android with the WhereYouGo app
Pocket PC with the Wherigo Player

Playing the Game

Once you have the Player ready to go, you will need to log in at Wherigo.com using your Geocaching.com account login to download the The Independence Trail.gws cartridge. You will run the cartridge from the device's Wherigo Player, not from the Geocaching application.

Garmin users should turn off tracking on their GPS receivers before starting. iPhone users should occasionally wave their iPhone in a horizontal "figure 8" to ensure compass calibration.

Is logging my find any different for this cache?
Logging your Wherigo find on Geocaching.com is no different than logging any other puzzle cache.

Logging your Wherigo find on Wherigo.com offers some additional options:
1. Write Log
2. Unlock the cartridge by Uploading your Save Game
3. Unlock the cartridge by Entering the Unlock Code

After completing the Wherigo cache and logging on Geocaching.com, feel free to post a log on Wherigo.com. Mentioning your Wherigo device / player in the log will help ensure compatibility.

Unlocking the cartridge on Wherigo.com is not required, but it would be greatly appreciated. After you've completed the cartridge you should see an "unlock code" on your device. Either write it down or better yet do a screen grab so you won't lose it. You can use this code on Wherigo.com and it will "Unlock" it, giving you full credit for completing the cartridge. It will also help track the number of completions for this cartridge.

Any insight about your experience (good or bad) will help me fine tune the The Indepedence Trail cartridge.
