Bickley - St Georges Church

Another in the ever expanding Church Micro Series, started by Sadexploration.
The area behind St Georges Church is Bickley Park, bounded by Bickley Park Road, Pines Road, Chislehurst Road and the railway at Chislehurst station. This area was once the estate of Bickley Hall, a large house built in 1780 for John Wells, a shipbuilder. In 1861 with Bickley Park was sold to George Wythes to develop for housing, with Bickley Hall finally being demolished in 1963. The parish for this development was created out of the old Parish of Bromley.
St Georges was built by F. Barnes and was opened for worship in 1864 with Edward John Selwyn as the first vicar. The Victorian Gothic style of the church remains substantially the same as at that time, although in 1906 Newton rebuilt the spire to the current height of 175ft as the Caen stone had suffered substantial deterioration. The building suffered frequently in the Second World War, losing much of its glass and the roof, with a flying bomb detonating across the road on 18th June 1944 putting the church out of action for two years. On 6th April 1989 there was a fire which destroyed much of the interior. In 1991 a new ring of 6 bells was installed, with a further two added in 1993.
Today, the building is in sound condition and has a light and airy interior.
