A Mighty Girl 7: Nicole Ticea
Nicole Ticea is a young woman from British Columbia, Canada who, at the age of 16, developed a low-cost, rapid-response, early stage HIV test. Her device, which is disposable and electricity-free, provides results in less than an hour and costs less than $5 to produce. Her goal was to create a device that could be used where the patients actually are, and to detect the presence of HIV DNA or RNA early enough that treatment can be initiated very early (when it is most effective), and the risk of transmission can be made lower, as people are more rapidly aware of their HIV status.
