In September 2015,
the first light way rail - aka tram - in Sub-Sahara Africa opened in Addis Ababa.
At a total length of 31,6 kilometres, currently two lines run the city, roughly east to west and central to the south of the city. Trains on the north south line are blue and white, whilst on the east west line they are green and white.
The fares cost 2-6 Ethiopian Birr. Tickets are bought at orange coloured kiosks next to each station.
The construction took three years and cost 475 million USD. There are plans to expand the network in all four directions.
While some may argue that the tram itself is a transport impediment - forcing cars to drive up to 4 kms to find a crossing - the network has been taken up well by commuters: You'll hardly see any empty carriages but rather feel quite squeezed on your trip.
Beware of muggles! Please use extra stealth when retrieving and putting back the container! Best: Wait for a tram.
