A Cipher Series

Lewis is the twelfth in a series created for those interested in some degree in cryptology. It is recommended that one do these in alphabetical order, the entire series being Alberti (GC3TAT5), Babbage (GC3V0GV), Colossus (GC3VAFW), Doyle (GC3WTWC), Enigma (GC3X6T8), Flowers (GC41DHR), Gifford (GC6B6HE), Hammer (GC6BR6X), Information (GC6CAXY), Jabberwocky (GC6CY2J), Koblitz (GC6DFP0), Lewis (GC6DMYB), Michie (GC6E4GP), Newman (GC6ENZC), Oded (GC6FNDV), Painvin (GC6G245) and Quits (GC6GN8R). Some, like this one, can be done independent of the others but, in general, information given and skills acquired in one cache will not be repeated in subsequent caches and so we suggest that they be done in order. We hasten to add that there is not necessarily any connection between the name of the cache and the type of cipher used therein.

Lewis - the Name of the Cache

Frank Waring Lewis (1912 - 2010) was a cryptographer and cryptic crossword creator whose puzzles were printed in The Nation for over sixty years - a total of 2962 puzzles. From the United States, he was a man of many sides with secretarial training, civil service qualifications and a master’s degree in music to his credit.
A government employee at the time of the U.S. entry into WWII, he was hired as a cryptologist dealing with Japanese codes. For his service, he was decorated twice and much of his work remains a secret.
Lewis became interested in cryptic crosswords during his WWII time at Bletchley Park, the British cryptology centre. He began to produce puzzles for The Nation in 1947 and continued doing so almost until his death.

Lewis, the Cache

This puzzle is not really a cryptogram in that the grid below contains the entire message in plain text in a single strand and there are no extra letters. Your task is simply to detect the pattern in which the letters have been inserted into the grid and to follow them - up, down, left, right or diagonally - to produce the co-ordinates of the cache. Thanks to Hydroid for the assistance in creating the table - something that is beyond us!! You may still wish to transfer it to paper - we recommend lined - often it's easier to "see" what you're looking at if you have a "hard copy."
