The Mullet train : In 1888 the railroad extension from Ocala to Homosassa began operation. The steam locomotive ,mail car , two passenger cars and a flatbed car ran daily and made the wonders of Homosassa more accessible to tourists and businessmen alike.“Mullet Train” would stop here to let passengers off to view Homosassa Springs and its multitude of colorful fresh and saltwater fish, while the crews would load up freight of fresh crab, cedar, spring water and fish.
The train depot was built in 1893 on what is now called Yulee drive. Engine 501from Homosassa earned the nickname The Mullet Train because it transported approx. 1200 barrels of fish each day.
