Geocache Description:

The PandaMania art exhibit took place in the summer of 2004 throughout DC.  After the exhibit ended, the panda statues were sold or donated.  There are only a few of these statues left in the area.  This series will bring you to the ones that I've found.

I want to give a HUGE thanks to Julius169 for pointing out these statues. I'm never out in Reston so I never would have found these without his email directing me out here. Thanks again!

Welcome to Reston Station! Even though most of the area is still under construction, you can visit the PandaMania statues :) These three made their appearance in November 2015 and are on loan from a private collector.

N 38° 56.925 W 77° 20.328 - China Doll

This regal panda by Amy Goodstine and Brandon Bloch is depicted in the gown of an imperial Chinese princess, complete with purple and green butterflies flying amid purple magnolias on a golden background. The artists intended that this bear represent the continuing and friendly cultural relationship between the United States and China.

Walking all the way around the panda, count the number of butterflies that you see. Now count the number of fans that you see. Subtract the number of fans from the number of butterflies. This is the answer for B.

N 38° 56.921 W 77° 20.319 - Pandala Anderson

Pandala Anderson by Maggie O’Neill was part of the panda-as-caricature genre, this time as the Baywatch babe, Pamela Anderson (complete with swimsuit and lifesaving equipment). This was, by far, the most whimsically outrageous panda in the exhibition. And, not coincidentally, it was the panda that auctioned for the highest price -- more than US$11,000.

Pandala Anderson is currently missing!!!! I’ll keep her photo and description up as a place holder/memorial.

N 38° 56.932 W 77° 20.292 - PanDragon

Tucked away in a corner you’ll find PanDragon. Although there were several pandas in PandaMania that had been either re-designed as dragons or had a dragon theme of some kind, this one has been called the best. Tita Rutledge claimed that she wanted her pandragon to appear mostly harmless while at the same time a bit scary. The result was fantastic, in both meanings of the word.

Count the number of wings on this PanDragon This is the answer for A.

N 38° 58.438 W 077° A0.25B - Final Stage

Now head away from the hustle and bustle of the area and visit a place much more suitable for pandas (or other bears). Although the final is walkable, I'd suggest driving, especially if you have children with you.. The cache container is found at:

N 38° 58.438 W 077° A0.25B

  • A =number of wings on PanDragon
  • B =number of butterflies on China Doll- number of fans on China Doll

STEALTH REQUIRED. Although you're not out in the open, per se, there are a surprising number of dog walkers/trail runners passing by. As always, please replace as found.Final is only available dawn to dusk. Night caching is strictly prohibited!

Once you've finished, make the most of the day and visit one of the many other caches close by.

Don't forget to post any photos that you take with the pandas!
