Geocache celebrates long lost party location. Cook’s Corner was a gathering place for the locals in the 1950’s and 1960’s for having fish fries (and probably a lot more partying). Just in the past year, I heard mention of Cook’s Corner again from an elderly relative and was motivated to commemorate the location with this Geocache. You will have to paddle (fishing is optional) to reach this Geocache. By my GPS, paddle is 1.06 miles from parking. A little more history - Boddies Mill Pond and it’s the current mill were built in 1834 and looks very much today as it did when built. Nathan Boddie, a signer of the Halifax Resolves (which led to the American Revolution), had built one of the first grist mills in Nash County at this spot on Peachtree Creek in 1778. Little is known about the size or appearance of that first mill but the current mill with its plain Jane weather boarded construction looks much as it did when built. It is a fine example of mortise and pinion construction framed with 30 foot long hand-hewn timbers. Several generations of the Boddie family continued grinding corn meal here as part of the Rose Hill Plantation until the Great Depression wiped the family out in 1928. The mill continued operating under various owners until it closed in the 1970's. The grist mill is privately owned but unlike most privately owned grist mills of North Carolina, Boddies Mill and pond is freely accessible to the public for boating and fishing (and geocaching). Paddle safely, wear your PFD, and leave no trace.
